It is sad to learn that our friend Barry Bankhead died unexpectedly in early December 2006 of a heart attack.

I acquainted Barry in 1989 when the Chinese students began their marathon demonstration at Tiananmen Square protesting the corruptive communist Government.  At the time, Barry lived in London and worked in Bristol as an engineer; every evening he cycled and brought 2 hot flasks of coffee and tea to the picket line outside the Chinese Embassy at Portland Place.  He was such a lovely humanist, and together from 1989 we are the last 2 comrades left in charge of the mundune affairs of the Chinese Solidartiy Campaign.

Barry went back to Portsmouth in around the year 2,000 to look after his ailing mother.   His mother died a couple of years ago, then he became a lodger with a Portsmouth Chinese family which he spent sometime mentoring the family.  We used to meet on June 4 at the Candle Light Vigil outside the Chinese Embassy, then we would have a meal.  We also invited Barry to the Chinese New Year Banquet organized by the Islington Chinese Association, the year before last he came with Stephen Yung and his wife, his Chinese landlord.  Last time, when he was with us, someone volunteered to take a picture of us, but I said there would be lots of opportunities.  Now we have missed the photo opportunity, but not our memories.

Barry was 69, single and left no will.  Apparently he had no other relatives.  His welfare is being looked after by the Public Protection Authority.  The funeral is arranged on 22 January 2007 Monday at 10 am at the Portchester Crematorium, Upper Cornaway Lane, Portchester, Hampshire PO16 8NE, tel: 01329 622532.  The funeral director is Daniel Dashmond, tel: 02392823855, the Co-operative Florist, tel: 0800 243380.

At this coming June 4th Commemmoration, we will sadly miss Barry.  Rest in Peace.
